ARTISTS REPUBLICS of GEEELONG [ back ]
Taking place on 29-30 May in some of central Geelong's alleys, lanes and cul de sacs. Teams of artists, working with community groups, will stage the republics, responding to the theme of Unpopular Culture as a part of the 2004 Next Wave Festival.
Inspired by Erwin Strauss's book, How To Start Your Own Country, as well as the anger and shame many of us felt at the actions of our government in the treatment of those seeking refuge from persecution, we are declaring Geelong independent and autonomous, home to unpopular culture and artistic independence (two days only)!
Open Hand Press, last seen at Plus(+), will also be there, assisting artists and groups in the production of posters, postcards, manifestos, badges, maps and other ephemera.
